I am a journalist and essayist based in Chicago. My work focuses on independent and avant garde music, art, dance, and culture. I am a champion for the underdog. You can currently find my work as the Senior Editor of This Recording, in Design Bureau and online for Rhizome and Gapers Block, among others.
I am open to new writing opportunities and can be contacted at: bnjulious [at] gmail.com.
So basically I’m still obsessed with and can’t stop thinking about Hubbard Street Dance Chicago’s danc(e)volve: New Works Festival at the MCA. I wrote a review and it’s now online. I’ve been tweeting on and off about it since last Sunday afternoon and I can’t get dancers Johnny McMillan and Emilie Leriche out of my head (stan status?). As a whole, the festival exceeded all of my expectations.
Two things:
- Today is my first day as a new Senior Editor of This Recording.
- I wrote about race, class, gentrification, and changing neighborhoods. The essay is the second part to an essay I wrote in October. The first part focused on the Northwest Side of Chicago (where I live) and the second largely focuses on Oak Park, the Austin neighborhood, the South Side, and finding meaning in one’s environment.
Getting free tickets to attend performances was one of the highlights of working at the MCA Chicago. Sometimes I felt like I was a little too obsessed with the behind-the-scenes action, wishing that I too could be on stage performing. I recently previewed another weird, unusual performance (including tea, cake, and the atomic bomb) at the museum as part of the Chicago Humanities Festival.

I Love My Wife - an online radio show focusing on indie, noise pop, noise rock, and all music weird-related.
Archives of the radio show I co-host on Brooklyn Radio, I Love My Wife, are available here. Below, a description:
Aside from scones, weirdos with guitars are the favorite things for Chicago-based music writers Britt Julious (aka “Wife Material”) and Arianna Stern (aka “Tough Love”). Throw in a couple of ear-bleeding yelps, the eclectic use of electronics, and heavy distortion and you’ve got “I Love My Wife.” We’re Listening. Maybe you should be, too.
